Last week, I had the privilege of volunteering with the Point in Time Count (PIT), engaging with the experiences of unhoused individuals. It reminded me of my Army training, particularly the concept of a "Chokepoint" – a constrained area that challenges movement and presents obstacles. In both situations, navigating through difficulties requires resilience and support.
In the military, encountering a chokepoint demanded strategic planning, adaptability, and sometimes acknowledging shortcomings in the initial approach. Similarly, individuals facing homelessness often encounter their own chokepoints – moments of vulnerability and obstacles that restrict their path. Reflecting on this, it's evident that acknowledging these chokepoints and recognizing our own limitations is crucial.
Just as we strategize and seek alternative routes in the military, addressing personal chokepoints requires a willingness to identify shortcomings and learn from failures. No one goes through life without facing challenges, and it's okay to admit when we need help navigating those difficulties. In fact, embracing this vulnerability can be a source of strength.
Returning to the fight, whether in a military context or facing personal challenges, is a testament to resilience and the impact of a robust support system. Acknowledging our chokepoints becomes an opportunity for growth, turning challenges into lessons that propel us forward.
The Point-in-Time Count exemplified the importance of community and resources. Just as those experiencing homelessness were provided with resources and points of contact, we, too, should seek and offer support. A good support system, much like a well-thought-out military strategy, can make navigating chokepoints more manageable.
The Point-in-Time Count experience underscored the significance of community and resources. Just as those facing homelessness received support, let's reflect on our own lives. Recognizing and addressing our chokepoints is not a sign of weakness but an opportunity for growth. In life's dynamic journey, a sound support system and access to resources can help us navigate through life’s many challenges. Each one of us has the potential to contribute to someone's journey, turning chokepoints into pathways of hope and resilience and even a since of belonging. After all, the strength of a community lies in its ability to uplift every individual, thus doing a good work.
As you continue on, remember your resources available to you, those whom support you and you support so you can be ready to faces life’s challenges.
With compassion,
Jamari
